The Notion of Self-Directed Learning
Self-directed learning is an enticing method to let students
have a proper understanding of the reason to study and learn properly.
Self-directed learning helps to identify the main goals in studying, that are
determined by students’ interests and aspirations, so they could direct their
energy to what they really like and would love to learn.
Readiness to Learn
First of all, students should be ready to learn that is
defined by a simple analysis of what a student already knows, and things he/she
would like to learn. Being ready for learning presupposes independent ability
to interact, make his/her own decisions, and strive for progress. A student is
aware of the way to get a positive result while learning that means being
persistent and dedicate much time for repetition, analyzing information
regarding various facets of it. A learner should have a desire to complete any
tests as they will show practical knowledge and places to continue working on.
Defining Goals
A learner should have a smart approach to studying. One
can’t embrace everything at once, and a smart approach is really helpful here.
Defining things you like the most is crucial as it will help saving your time
and energy instead of spending it what you fancy, and what will give a positive
result. A student should define a career he/she is eager to pursue, and
proficiently learn the most important subjects. An independent learner should
strive for additional information.
Self-Evaluation
Students should be able to have a critical approach to
themselves and evaluate their real level of knowledge. Being able to assess
yourself and have an adequate self-esteem is vital as lowering your abilities
and level of knowledge will result in despair and dissatisfaction. That’s why
even while studying at school, a student should be able to self-assess
himself/herself accordingly.
Fostering Responsibility
Every student in a self-directed learning should be able to
take responsibility for his/her actions. He/she should be responsible for the
efficacy of the material they learn and how they are able to practically apply
their knowledge. Students should learn how to organize their learning process
in a way so all the required tasks they could perform on time. That may be
possible with the ability to prioritize.
Conclusion
Self-directed learning prepares students for an adult life
where they should quickly react to a changing environment, and being able to
take control of what they learn, and what actions they take. Self-directed
learning presupposes independent goals-setting, understanding your own
interests, preferences and acting accordingly.
